This cake is sweet and so good that it doesn't need anything else. But topping it with strawberries and homemade whipped cream can only make it better. You can make this not only as a sheet cake but a layer cake as well as cupcakes. Use your favorite icing and you'll have a great cake. This is not diet-friendly, but why not indulge every now and then, right? Set out the milk, eggs, and butter on the countertop an hour before starting the cake. This allows them to be at room temperature for better results. Chill the mixing bowl and whisk for the whipped cream in the fridge for at least an hour.

Voted Members' Choice! Bea is absolutely right... This homemade white cake doesn't need a bit of frosting! However, it would be delicious with frosting too. We tried the homemade whipped cream and macerated strawberries that Bea suggested, and it was a wonderful dessert. It's a versatile cake, and you'll never want to use a boxed mix after tasting a slice. It's tender, yet sturdy, with a mild, subtle vanilla flavor. Use this cake recipe to make a layer cake, 9x13, or cupcakes.

How To Make bea's homemade white cake

  • Add sliced strawberries and granulated sugar to a bowl; chill.
    1
For the strawberries, wash and cap 1 pound of strawberries. Slice or chop and place into a bowl. Cover strawberries with 1/2 cup sugar, stir, cover, and place in the fridge for a couple of hours to marinate. Place a bowl and whisk for the whipped cream in the fridge to chill.
  • Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
    2
For the cake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13-inch pan and set aside. I like Wilton cake release available at Walmart or Michaels.
  • Combine cake flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
    3
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cake flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar. Incorporate eggs one at a time.
    4
In another mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add one egg at a time, mixing after each egg.
  • Mix in vanilla extract.
    5
    Mix in the vanilla extract.
  • Add flour a little at a time.
    6
Add the flour mixture a little at a time.
  • Alternate flour and milk.
    7
Alternatively, add the flour mixture and the milk.
  • Pour batter into the prepared baking dish.
    8
Spread evenly into the prepared pan.
  • Bake the cake.
    9
Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until a tester comes out clean.
  • Whip heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar until fluffy.
    10
For homemade whipped cream, into a cold bowl, add 1 cup of heavy whipping cream. Beat on high for a couple of minutes or until it's the consistency of whipped topping. Fold in 1/2 cup powdered sugar.
  • Whipped cream and strawberries on top of a slice of white cake.
    11
This makes an excellent strawberry shortcake. Put a piece of this cake into a bowl, and spoon on the desired amount of sweetened strawberries. Add a big dollop of homemade whipped cream and top with more strawberries. Enjoy!
